In 1909, two men had the same idea. They both wanted to be the first humans to set foot on the South Pole. Another man had recently been the first to walk on the North Pole, so they felt it important that they should be the first ones to take the South. One of the men was a British naval officer, named Robert Falcon Scott. Scott was pale with dark hair, of average height, with blue eyes. The other man was the Norwegian explorer named Roald Amundsen, he was tall, with mousy hair, and also had blue eyes.
The two men and their respective teams began to compete about time, getting ready, sailing from North to South, setting up camp; fast, waiting for the winter on the ice, getting a fast start and running fast in the direction of the South Pole as the western world and western media watched. The British man, Scott, attempted to reach his goal by using snowmobiles and small horses, failing miserably and reaching his death before he could return home. Amundsen, the Norwegian, solicited the help of Greenlandic sled dogs to transport him towards the South Pole, a goal that he reached on the 15th of December in 1911. However, this is not the story of these two men.
This is the story of the 97 dogs upon whom Amundsen based his victory.
